Meganisi
Island
Meganisi is a small Greek island located in the Ionian Sea, along the western coast of Greece, off the coast of the larger island of Lefkada. The island has three scenic villages: Vathi, Katomeri and Spartochori, each with its own unique beauty. Meganisi is characterized by lush greenery, rocky landscapes, and an abundance of pebbled beaches and sea caves. It is an attractive destination for anyone seeking natural beauty and tranquility. The numerous sheltered bays around the island attract yachting and sailing enthusiasts as well.
History
Meganisi, like many other islands in the region, has a history that dates to ancient times. The first name of Meganisi was Taphos, received from its settler and first king, Taphius son of Poseidon. Some researchers believe that Meganisi was the Homeric Island of Krocylea, which was part of Odysseus’ kingdom. Homer mentions that Aghialos, a wise man and a close friend of Odysseus and then his son Mentis, in whose form Athena presented herself to Telemachus and gave him courage, reigned among the Taphians.
Islands
Meganisi’s location near other Ionian Islands, such as Lefkada, Corfu, Kefalonia, Ithaca and so many other smaller ones makes it an ideal base for exploring the surrounding archipelago. It is equally ideal for those interested in island hopping and exploring the diverse landscapes and cultures of the Ionian Islands.
