Meganisi

Meganisi is a small Greek island in the Ionian Sea, located off the western coast of Greece, near the larger island of Lefkada. The island is home to three scenic villages: Vathi, Katomeri, and Spartochori, each offering its own unique charm. Meganisi is known for its lush greenery, rugged landscapes, and an abundance of pebbled beaches and sea caves, making it an ideal destination for those seeking natural beauty and tranquility. The island’s numerous sheltered bays also attract yachting and sailing enthusiasts.

History

Meganisi, like many islands in the region, boasts a rich history dating back to ancient times. Originally known as Taphos, the island was named after its first settler and king, Taphius, the son of Poseidon. Some scholars believe that Meganisi may be the Homeric island of Krocylea, which was part of Odysseus’ kingdom. In Homer’s tales, Aghialos, a wise man and close companion of Odysseus, and later his son Mentis—whom Athena impersonated to inspire courage in Telemachus—ruled over the Taphians.
