When we hear of fjords our mind usually goes to Norway – and rightly so, as there they are so imposing that they look like flooded river gorges. However, an idyllic destination in our own Ionian Sea also has such lacy, long narrow sea bays: their scale may be smaller, but many consider them to be the most beautiful in Greece.
The reason for Meganisi, which is located between Lefkada and Etoloakarnania. It is considered the largest among the so-called “Principles”, having an area of 20.1 sq.km. According to the 2011 census, its permanent residents amount to 1,041 people.
In Homer it is called Tafos and its king Ahilaos is depicted as a friend of Odysseus. In later years it is not excluded that it was a den of pirates, however from the 7th century BC. and then followed the fate of neighboring Lefkada. After all, access is only possible from its eastern coast, from the coastal town of Nydri, from which there are regular routes. The route takes 25 minutes, with the ferries arriving at Spilia (the picturesque port of Spartochori) and Vathy. It is worth noting that the people of Meganisi also took part in the Revolution of 1821. In fact, the chief Dimos Tsel also came from there.
